Patricia Lee Gauch grew up in Lockmoor, Michigan, and had what sounds like an unfettered childhood, playing out with the many children in the neighbourhood. She particularly enjoyed playing “Pretend”, and had two tiny imaginary creatures called Brownie and Pinkie. She read Ping by Marjorie Flack and Kurt Wiese and Millions of Cats by Wanda Gag; the Bobbsey twins and Janet Lambert. At Miami University she joined the college newspaper, and after leaving, and marriage, worked for the Louisville Courier Journal. She did a PhD in English Literature, and when her children were small, began to write for them, writing over 25 books. When her children left home, she became Editor in Chief of Philomel Books.
