Fire in the Wind

Houghton Mifflin, Boston, 1961, 244 pp, illus Robert MacLean

Set during the time of the Chicago fire, this is the story of Jeff, whose Civil War veteran father is
a detective in the Chicago police force. Jeff befriends a less fortunate boy, Newman Higginbotham,
and helps Newman get a job as a stable boy. It looks as if this has backfired when Newman is
accused of being involved in horse thefts from the stable. Jeff goes undercover to investigate.
