Michael Slade

The Horses of Central Park

Scholastic, New York, 1992, hb, 119 pp.
Reprinted Scholastic, 1994, pb

Twelve-year-old Wendell talks to the horses in Central Park, and learns about their lives.  Shocked at what he learns,
he and his friend Judith help the horses who pull the carriages in Central Park to have a glorious session of freedom
in the park, before they return to their ordinary lives.

Michael Slade is a playwright, writer for television, and has won awards for his children’s literature.  He has written musicals, and also wrote the book accompanying Pokemon Live!, which my son would have thanked him for had he known about it.  He was Pokemon obsessed. Michael Slade’s horse book, The Horses of Central Park, won the 1993 ISAR award.

Finding the book:  easy to find.  It was not published in the UK.
