This is one of the better "spin-off" books written apparently by Walter Farley and adapted from the original for, I'm guessing, about Third Grade readers. The story only covers the action up to Alex bringing THE BLACK home to New York. Henry Dailey and any racing are not included. The illustrations are very nice and it is a good children’s book. Oversized illustrated boards. I don't believe it's in print any more but you see quite a few copies on eBay so it's not very hard to find.

THE BLACK STALLION and THE BLACK STALLION RETURNS

United Artists, 1982 and 1983
"Story, music and photos from the Original Motion Picture". These are both 24 page paper wrap booklets of the photo stories produced by United Artists in 1982 and 1983 respectively. MOST of the photos were in the movie. Since THE BLACK STALLION was almost completely re-edited before it was released, there were lots of scenes that actually ended up "on the cutting room floor" and some of the photos are from those portions. Some copies of these two booklets include 45 RPM phonograph records . Later editions had cassette tapes with the simple text story and music.

This is an easy reader version adapted by Walter Farley and illustrated in color by Sandy Rabinowitz. It again only covers the story from Alec and The Black on the ill-fated Drake until they are rescued and arrive in New York. Simple text, lovely illustrations. Sandy Rabinowitz did all the cover illustrations for the original paperback editions of the Black Stallion series. This has only appeared in hard cover and is rather hard-to-find.
