Mary Gervaise Character Lists

By Dawn Harrison

I have noticed a slightly discrepancy in my books: sometimes the main character is referred to as Georgia and sometimes as Georgie. My copy of A Pony Of Your Own is not a first edition, but an Armada paperback, however I have checked my copy of Ponies and Holidays (second in the series) which is a first edition but 4th impression, and the same thing occurs then. It appears to be a running theme throughout the series. However the series is referred to always as "G for Georgia" so I am going to stick throughout the character list to Georgia rather than Georgie.

A quick note about locations

The location is given as "Gwynt Riding School, Pony Pass, Nr Llyn Glas, North Wales". It's difficult to pinpoint an exact location, but from the terrain described, I would guess that Mary Gervaise was basing this book on Snowdonia. When Lucy is describing the local surroundings, she mentions "the ridge with Pony Pass, going up to the Cader range". The Cader Idris (or Cadair Idris) is a mountain in Snowdonia. There are 3 paths to the mountain Cadair Idris, but the easiest is called Pony Path. So drop the Idris, and change Path to Pass, and there you have your location.  There is a peak in Snowdonia called Llyn Glas. Neston (a town) is named, but there is no place called that in Wales. It's very similar to what Judith Berrisford did with Pony Trekkers/Misfit Pony, but there isn’t (or never was) a riding school/pony trekking centre called Gwynt Riding School.

The translations are correct. Fach means “little” in English, but Shân is using it as a term of endearment. Gwynt means "wind".
