We Started a Riding Club

Monica Wycherly, age 14, narrator of the book. Also known as Mickey.

Simone Wycherly, age 16, her sister.

Dean Wycherly, age 10, their brother.

Charles Wycherly, age 7, their youngest brother.

Peta, Monica's cocker spaniel puppy.

Their mounts: Camellia, a grey Welsh Mountain pony; Toshagg, a dark chestnut Arab-Dartmoor cross, and Festival, a chestnut Anglo-Arab.

Their father, a playwright, and mother, an experienced horsewoman herself.

Their grandfather, Sir William Geraldson, Master of the Shorne Valley Foxhounds.

Club members:

Sylvia Marsh, owns Ecstacy.

Theresa Scoffield, owns Nero.

Max Carlton, age 15, owns Miranda and Carnival.

Penny Rochester, age 12. Does not own a pony for most of the book.

Richard Todd-Wakefield, age 17, owns George.

Jancis Hepburn, owns Mongoose.

Roger, her brother age 6, owns Golly.

Mary Blomfield, age 15, owns Polly.

Geoffrey, her brother age 12, owns Dolly.

Septimus Ericson, age 18.

Salome, hs sister, age 15.

Jolyon and Loretta, their brother and sister, 12 year old twins.

Ben, mount of Septimus and Salome.

Rattlesnake, black pony, mount of Jolyon and Loretta.

Caspar Mather, owns Linden Lea and Beggar Maid.

Jody, his sister, owns Arabian Night and Judas.

Hunt staff:

Col. Swift, field master.

Vulture, Albatross, Woodpecker, Nightjar and Golden Pheasant -- Col. Swift's horses.

Gideon, better known as Gig, whipper-in.

Crusty, hunt horse, most often ridden by whipper in, but sometimes by Monica.

Others:

Sherwood, cousin to the Wycherlys.

Fanfare, Sherwood's horse, sometimes ridden by Simone.

Ralph Sheldon, top-class horseman who comes to judge the riding club hunter trials.

Prune, Grandfather's gardener.

Dombey, Grandfather's groom.

Mrs. Hitchen, Grandfather's housekeeper.

Mr. and Mrs. Tubb, village neighbours.

John Berry, non-horse friend of Dean and Charles.

Robert Martinique, actor-producer who is putting on one of Mr. Wycherly's plays.

Parents of a number of the club members make brief appearances.

Gaberielle Flower who owns ponies Strawberry Fair and Revelation.

Mrs. Flower.

Nanny, who looks after Gabrielle while her parents are away.

Hogg, the Flowers' groom.

Mr. Buchanan, who previously taught Gabrielle riding.

 

Jane Portland, age 11, owns Masquerade.

Her mother.

 

Hubert Sparrow

His father, who runs a large horse dealing stable.

Moonraker, his favourite pony.

Auntie Nell who keeps house for the Sparrow family.

 

Jeremy Blythe, aged 12, owns Painted Lady.

His mother and father, a retired naval commander.

Macdonald, the Blythes' Scottish terrier.

 

Erica Nicholson, age 14, owns Fatima and Red Gauntlet.

Her mother and father who are travelling in South America.

Her grandmother.

Emmy, her grandmother's long-time maid.

 

Hilary Tompkins, age 20, owns Kestrel.

David Leigh, her fiance, a junior diplomat.

Mr. and Mrs. Merrily, own the farm where Hilary boards Kestrel.

 

Sir Edwin Gladchild, judge of the Pony Club gymkhana.

Mrs. Shoemaker, judge of the Pony Club gymkhana.

 

Rosemary Dakin, owns Cokernut.

Duncan Pargeter, rides Pixie.

Dickie Daniels, owns Mumbo Jumbo.
