This book seems to be based on reality, as Judith Berrisford used to live in Llandudno.
Just outside Conwy (which is 4 miles from Llandudno) there used to be a real-life
pony trekking place called Pinewoods. Whether Judith had any links with it, I do
not know. It closed down a couple of years ago, though all the stabling etc still
exist: it is now run as a livery centre.
Fairy Glen does exist. Jackie gets charged 50p entry to go onto Fairy Glen; you may
be pleased to know it still costs that much 46 years later! It costs £3.00 to park
though, and if you do not pay up then you will get chased for your money! (I know
this from experience.) Llewellyn's Castle does not exist as a name itself, but it
is called PenyBryn Cottage, which in reality, is Llewellyn’s (an old Prince) lost
Palace. Additionally, the old Pinewoods is 2.5 miles (and easily trekkable) from
Conwy Castle, so it is possible that she could mean that. Additionally Bwlch-Glas
(a local gorge) does exist: it is about 8 miles away from the real-life Pinewoods
centre.
Coed Celyn does not exist, though there are plenty of places around the Conwy area
that it could be. Bluebird Cafe does no longer exist: though it used to. Before the
A55 used to take you near Conwy, the old route into Conwy used to have lots of cafes.
If anyone has seen Our Day Out, when they get near Conwy Castle they go into a cafe,
which is in fact the Bluebird Cafe. Certainly when Judith Berrisford was living in
the area, it would be running and thriving.
Torrent Falls and the similarly named Torrent Falls Cafe also do not exist, however
I think it is likely she means the Conwy Falls (and Conwy Falls Cafe) which is 2
miles away from Fairy Glen. Finally, Capel Bach does not exist: however like Coed
Celyn there are several places in the area that it could be. Similarly, Bryn Cledwyn
and Lake Heron also do not exist: again there are several local spots it could be.

Additionally like Pinewoods, Shell Island does exist in North Wales. It is approx

Berrisford lived. Sandbeach does not exist: although there are a couple of odd places
it could be.

Tessa also appears but there is some discrepancy. Tessa is described in my copy [of
Misfit Pony] as a cousin to John and Susan. However in Pony Trekkers she is described
as a sister to John and Susan. My copy of Misfit Pony is a first edition, however
Pony Trekkers is a (much) later reprint. So either Judith Berrisford has made a mistake
with this book, or in Pony Trekkers the publisher has changed it.
The locations:
Like Pony Trekkers, there are some real-life places. Beddgelert (and the mentioned
grave which also exists) is about 50 minutes’ drive from where the real life Pinewoods
is. Llanbedr does not exist near Pinewoods, but there is a place called Llanbedr-y-Cennin
, which is about 10 miles. However Llanbedr-y-Cennin is a tiny (and somewhat remote!)
village, whereas Llanbedr is described as a town. However, Judith Berrisford could
be meaning a town called Llanrwst (which is on the way from Pinewoods to Fairy Glen!)
which is 14 miles away. Devil's Kitchen is mentioned, which does exist (it is in
Cwm Idwal National Nature Reserve) which is just over 20 miles away from Pinewoods.
Llyn Mawr (which means in English Big Lake) does not exist, however there are several
lakes in the area! Cerrig Fawr (a mountain) mentioned in the book also does not exist,
however there are tons of mountains in the area. Torrent Falls and Bluebird Cafe
are both mentioned again.
The only other point of interest is that Jackie and many of the Pony Trekkers visit
a Welsh Craft Shop. There is no shop called that, however in the locality there is
a (very small) chain called Craft Cymru (meaning Welsh Crafts) which you guessed
it, sells Welsh themed souvenirs. It's been going for donkey’s years, and probably
when Judith Berrisford was living in the area was going then!
