Alexa Romanes
Alexa Romanes has had a very varied career:  the played the Larkins’ eldest daughter Mariette (the part which later brought Catherine Zeta Jones to fame) in the BBC Radio adaptation Just Perfick from 1969.  As well as writing two pony books, a play and an early reader, she has, together with William Carnell, produced A Dartmoor Cantata, which is  based on the legends of Dartmoor.  She is still keen on folklore, and is also a member of a Ladies’ Morris side, Cogs and Wheels Ladies Morris.

Finding the books:  neither of the books is impossible to find:  Save the Horses is generally cheaper than The Gift Horse, but neither are particularly expensive.

Save the Horses
Beaver Books, 1983, 140 pp. Pb

When Kelsie comes down from London to spend the summer with Roger and Toby at Crantock, their parents’
Cornish farm and home for ill-treated horses, she steps straight into a financial crisis.  The three friends try to
help and their lives become very busy indeed, coping with ponies and jobs and trying to sort out the problems
caused by the new and badly run local riding school.  And when their neighbour’s valuable Arabian stallion
mysteriously disappears, the three are forced to become amateur sleuths as well....”

The Gift Horse
Beaver Books, 1985, London, 143 pp.  Pb

Kelsie is training to be a riding instructress and living with the Lanyons on their farm-cum-riding stables.  Her
life is perfect but for one thing: she desperately wants a horse of her own.  She ends up with a skewbald
gelding from the circus, who has been trained to buck people off...
