Old Joe - Brownie's original owner

Brian - a small boy, quite nervous. Buys Brownie at a sale.

Jean - a girl, friend of Brian's

Aunt - an aunt of Brian's, with whom he lives

Morella - a grey pony, belongs to Jean

There are various other people who are not given any specific names, such as Brian's father.
