Joan Begbie
Joan Begbie wrote Freelance the Pony.  Freelance is the daughter of the New Forest Kitty, fastest pony in the New Forest.  Freelance has many ups and downs before she is finally reunited with Judith, who loved her first and best.  As far as I know, Joan Begbie wrote no other pony books, though she did illustrate Jean Cree’s A Pocketful of Ponies (Witherby, 1956).

Finding the book:  can be pricey, but reasonably priced copies with dustjackets can still be found.

Freelance is a New Forest Pony, and
he falls upon evil days.  Judith and
her mother work and work to buy
Freelance from Mr Heydon, but on
the eve of her birthday, just when her
mother thinks they will be able to buy
him, there is terrible news.  Mr Heydon
has sold the pony to Will Wellow, who is only interested in making
a profit out of Freelance.  Judith vows that she will get Freelance
back even if she has to wait until the pony’s old and of no value
to anyone.
