Other stuff:

Thelwell was thoroughly merchandised:  as well as mugs, calendars, place mats you could buy a model Thelwell pony.  These were reasonably high end items:  the press advert below comes from Pony Magazine in the 1960s, and 49/6 equates to £2.47½ today.  A paperback children’s book then cost 2/6:  12½ p.  A 10 shilling note (50p) was a pretty handsome birthday present for my middle class family then,  and the Thelwell pony was certainly beyond me.
