Wesley Dennis notably illustrated many of Marguerite Henry’s books, and you can see more of his work here. You may well notice a slight similarity between the frontis for Black Beauty and Marguerite Henry’s Black Gold!
Wesley Dennis’ Black Beauty doesn’t have his most successful drawing on the front: Black Beauty’s eyes aren’t at all level. The other illustrations are far superior, and it’s a pity that one was chosen for the cover.
